Not Just For Men: Global Female Condom Day Celebrated Worldwide
Today, Pathfinder International celebrates Global Female Condom Day with educational events and advocacy around the world that brings a heightened focus on a still-obscure tool in women’s sexual and reproductive health.
Since 2014, Pathfinder has partnered with The Female Health Company, provider of the FC2 female condom, to increase access to the female condom in five countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
These condoms, approved by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, provide women more control over their sexual and reproductive health both as protection from sexually transmitted infections and powerful autonomy for women in family planning.
“Female condoms are power,” said Pathfinder. “Female condoms are unique—they give women the ability to control their future by putting the power in their hands to prevent both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.”
Pathfinder is showcasing the female condom through events and trainings around the world, including the following:
- Kenya: Global Female Condom Day events will occur simultaneously with Condom Day events in Kilifi County in the Coastal Region of Kenya. Events include FC2 exhibitions, distribution of FC2 female condoms and male condoms, HIV testing and family planning counseling for youth, and distribution of Information education and communication materials and HIV Testing and Counseling.
- Mozambique: In partnership with the other members of the Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Health, Pathfinder will lead a number of FC2 female condom awareness raising activities, including a female condom campaign at schools and in the communities, an awareness session at the Ministry of Health, and large participation in national TV and radio, including broadcast spots about female condoms on community radio stations.
- Nigeria: A Pathfinder roadshow around the Abuja Municipal Area featuring a FC2 truck and music to educate the general public about the FC2 female condom. Pathfinder will work with volunteers to engage the public in discussions about the health benefits of female condoms, to demonstrate how to insert the FC2 female condom, and distribute female condoms.
- Tanzania: Pathfinder will host a regional event to raise public awareness of the FC2 female condom and to engage with local government officials. The event will feature an information fair open to the public, followed by a session with around 300 invited participants including the Regional Commissioner of Shinyanga Region. FC2 female condoms will be provided to more than 200 community health workers for distribution in the communities where they work.
Pathfinder is committed to increasing awareness and availability of female condoms. Today is just one day to step up that fight.
